Are the people around you helping you to succeed, holding you back or just keeping you comfortable?
We all need a balance of people in our lives, so let’s take a look at the types of people that you can surround yourselves with, and how each has a place in your lives.
Agreeable People – these are people that make you feel comfortable, they are often your family and friends. They may be in the same industry/groups as you and have similar views. Often they have been around for years and they allow you to relax, get into a rhythm and boost your confidence.
Mentor or Coach – this is someone who is ‘on your side’, keen to see you succeed and to use their experience and skills to help you get there. This person should be your ‘truth teller’ - someone who sees where, how and why you are not achieving to your full potential; let’s you know, then works with you to overcome and move forward.
Group of Peers – Napoleon Hill’s Mastermind principle says “when a group of individual minds are coordinated and function in harmony; the increased energy created through that alliance becomes available to every individual in the group”. Whether you are part of a formal Mastermind program or have a group of peers that you meet with regularly, to brainstorm ideas, challenges and opportunities; the power of this group dynamics cannot be ignored.
Resource People – You can’t do or know everything, and often you waste a lot of time and money trying to. All around you are people who are experts in their fields and it’s important to recognise this, seek them out and bring them into your team. Obviously when you need a plumber or an electrician, you find one, but what about when you have a problem with your computer, website, staff, database etc. – do you spend hours ($$) trying to fix it only to end up frustrated and often making it worse? Accept what you do well and utilise the people who have the skills for the things you don’t.
People who will challenge your thinking – these people make you feel uncomfortable. They have a different perspective to you; a different way of thinking and viewing things in your world. Seek them out and engage in conversations with them, identify your blind spots, be open to new ideas. See where it takes you. Remember the saying “A mind once stretched by a new idea, never returns to its original dimensions” Ralph Waldo Emerson.
Successful people – people you look up to, that you aspire to be like; that are achieving things that you would like to achieve – in work, recreation, spirituality, community – any aspect of your life. Take time to watch and learn – what are their systems and priorities, who do they associate with, what do they read, what are their beliefs, etc. If possible, spend time with them, invite them out for a coffee or meal and ask them. Truly successful people will generally share generously.
